Alabama has now fired Mike Shula after a .500 6-6 season.

Just for the record, Alabama went 10-2 last season under Shula , and he has an overall record of 26-23 in 4 years with the school.

Man, Mal Moore (Alabama's AD) must be an Auburn fan, because he is sure trying his best to make sure the Tide are always second best to the Tigers.

The worst part, I dont think they're even going to let Shula coach the Tide's bowl game, stating that Joe Kines would serve as interim head coach.

Pure class acts, at least let the man finish his career at Alabama with a win.. Unless they let Shula coach the Tide's bowl game this season.. well, lets just say they're already going to have a hard time finding anyone stupid enough to accept the job as it is.

Apparently, unless your last name is Bryant you wont be coach at Alabama for more than a few years.

Man, I just can't believe they fired Don Shula. Look I know he didn't have a great year this with BAMA but he is a great coach. They lost a lot of key players and their keyest player in Brodie Cyrole! He has credentials I mean look at his dad maybe the greatest coach of all time and when he finally got a few good players last year and he went 10-2. He only got fired because he didn't beat Auburn and he wasn't "qualified" as a head coach anymore even though last year he sure was very qualified when he received that 6 year extension!

I know! I can't believe they fired their 90 year old coach. I mean, he was good with the Dolphins in the 1970's, but he hasn't been a great coach since the late 80's.

It seems like contracts really mean nothing these days. Coaches are fired all the time with years left on their contracts, and schools have no problem paying two coaches each year, one to coach, and one to sit at home.

Just saw Sports Center. NC State fired coach Chuck Amamto(He deserved it). They said Bill Cower(not sure if it's spelled right) of the Pittsburg Steelers is expected to step down at end of the season, and may take over for State. Probably won't though, he might take a year off.

Its because Shula is a stubborn coach. He was bascially given an ultimatum on making a significant amount of changes or he would be out. There had to be SOMETHING done with his staff. They just weren't cutting it. All he told Moore he wanted to do was move Ungerer (Special Teams) to Tight Ends and Recievers Coach, and let Dave Rader call the plays. Thats just unacceptable. Our O-Line has as much talent in the SEC, yet we continue to not execute on blocking assignments. Our Strength and Conditioning has obviously been lacking, we can barely punch the ball in from the one yard line. It has been known that our conditioning has been barely enforced upon players, and that it was no big deal if players didn't do the whole workout. Things just weren't clicking and unelss Shula made some big changes, he was gonna be gone.

Call us classless, but thats not what it boils down too. I wanted to keep Shula, I was all for keeping him. I think he was a great guy, and really was on the right track. But there were areas lacking that HAD to be improved on. And when he had a chance to at least make an effort to improve them, he didnt. Sure, he went 10-2 last season, and had a over .500 overall record, but the big games just werent there. 0-4 vs Auburn (first coach at Bama to do that). 1-3 against Tennessee. Winless against LSU also. You can win the little games, and sure pad your record, but when it boils down to it, you can't go anywhere without the big-time clutch wins.

I may just be an optimist (which I am), but I think Bama will go out and get a good coach, proven winner, headline name, and lead Bama to an SEC Championship (at least West Division winner) within the next two years.

Slip, I didnt say YOU were classless.. big difference between you and the people behind the scenes making the big calls.

Auburn fan or not (and my wife can, and will attest to this if asked) I always pull for Bama to win, except for that one game (anyone want to take a guess which game that is? lol!) Alabama's higher ups are just insane and down right crazy. You can NOT possibly win every game, every season, and thats ALL those people want. They want to win every game by at least 2 dozen points, and always be ranked #1. There is no such creature in all of sports.

Any coach with any good sense would stear clear of the Alabama job.. Why? you may be asking? Simple, winning isn't enough at Alabama.

Sooner or later, they're going to run out of coaches..

Oh I know you werent calling me classless. I dont know, its a sticky situation, and if it were me. I would have kept Shula for one more year. I think our problem lies in Mal Moore and Paul Bryant Jr. The "Powers That Be" better have someone lined up, or the fan base will be very angry if they screw us again.

That's the second worst record since 1957. Even Mike Dubose had 2 winning seasons, an SEC Championship and beat Auburn and LSU twice each. They made a huge mistake by hiring him. He only got the job because he played at Alabama and is Don Shula's son.

Considering what Mal Moore wanted Shula to do after an extremely disappointing season, I think he did the right thing. I supported Shula up until the loss to Arkansas this year, but I came to my senses. He didn't have a clue the previous 3 years and 12 games, what sense does it make to let him try it again when a bowl embarrassment might cost more recruits?

I like Shula and thought he should be allowed one more year, but that's if he made serious changes with his staff. He didn't, so I think the right thing was done.

You got to be kidding me about being stupid for taking a head coaching job at Alabama! There are some schools most coaches don't turn down an opportunity to coach at, and Alabama is one of them. I'm sure a multi-million dollar contract won't hurt any either.

Alabama is in the top 7 all-time in wins, top 5 all-time in winning percentage, has more 10 win seasons (by far) than any team in NCAA history, more bowl appearances than any team, more bowl wins than any team, 21 conference championships and 12 national titles. You can't come into a program like that and expect everyone to be okay with you not winning much, and looking bad when you do. That's why Notre Dame ditched Ty Willingham, why Miami fired Coker (partly anyway), why Bowden's bottom has been getting warm at Florida State and why people were ready for Paterno to retire at Penn State. Don't think that Tuberville can slack off much for more than a couple years without being on the hot seat again at Auburn either.

Being a Cincinnati Bengals fan, I'm familiar with having a Shula son as a coach. David Shula was our coach during some really dark times for the Cincy franchise. He was never really given any control or say in any player moves, the classic moment for that was during a press conference he was asked about the acquisition of a new player. He had no clue about it. Team record under David was 19-52.

Hmm, I thought Michigan was gonna have a sub-par season and have to fire Lloyd Carr, but look at that, he did well this year.

(except that last game... Rolling Eyes )

Shoot sorry about that "little" error. I meant of course Mike Shula.
