We have arrived at the half way point of the season. A few surprises this season, both good (like the Saints at 5-2 and at the top of the division) and the bad (like the Dolphins and the Cardinals who had good teams but play like the worst two teams in the NFL). What will the second half have in store. We'll soon find out. Anyway, another simply average week for me picking last week, but this week I'm very confident in most of these.

last week-straight up-8/14
against the spread- 7/14
8 week total- straight up- 71/114
against the spread- 59/114
top pick- correct (season 6-2)
upset pick- correct (season 6-2)

Well here we go again...
Packers (+3.5) at Bills- The Bills are worthless. Losman is worthless. Don't challenge this prediction because you won't win it. The Packers have actually looked pretty good lately (well at least the offense has). Packers win and cover.

Titans (+9.5) at Jaguars- This will be a close game. I never bought into the idea that the Jaguars had a good team, but they will win this one probably on the last drive of the game. Jaguars win but Titans cover the spread.

Saints (-1) at Bucs- Well, the Saints should have no trouble stopping this offense. As long as no mistakes are made, the Saints should cruise to a victory and cover the spread.

Dolphins at Bears (-13.5)-top pick- I don't like making a 2 td favorite my top pick, but the Bears might win by 5 td's or more. Bears win and easily cover and the 1972 Dolphins will have to wait another week to celebrate the fact that they have the only ever perfect record.(Side note- Bears will lose next week to the Giants).

Chiefs at Rams (-2)- Likely shootout here. Whoever scores last will win. That will be the Rams. Rams win and cover.

Texans (+13) at Giants- Whoever knows the Giants knows that the Giants have trouble with these "guaranteed wins." The Texans might have a lead after the third quarter, but Manning will lead the Giants in the 4th quarter to a victory. Giants win but Texans cover.

Cowboys (-3) at Redskins- Romo and Owens are good friends now (Obviously that is because he passes to him a lot). That is a good thing for the Cowboys. Owens gets 3 td's this week as the Cowboys win and cover easily.

Bengals at Ravens (-3)- Should be a great game here. Could go wither way, but I can see the Ravens stopping the running game and Chad Johnson receiving so therefore I take the Ravens to win and cover.

Falcons (-5) at Lions- If I could, I would call this my second top pick. The Lions simply suck (blunt enough for you?). Therefore, Falcons will rush for over 200 yards and win and cover the spread.

Vikings (-5) at 49ers- The way the Vikings looked last week, I'm not so confident in this pick. But since the 49ers have no defense, the Vikings will score a lot no matter how the offense plays. Vikings win and cover.

Broncos (+3) at Steelers- If the Broncos lose this game, Plummer needs to go. He is quite possibly one of the worst QB's in the league. The only reason why they win is because of their defense. I still want Cutler in but this week it wont matter. Broncos win and cover. Goodbye Steelers and your chance at going anywhere.

Browns at Chargers (-12.5)- Big blowout game. 40-7 maybe. Chargers should easily stop the Browns offense and easily score on the Browns defense. Chargers win and cover.

Colts (+3) at Patriots- Being labeled the game of the year. Everyone already knows how this has to end. Vinetieri will kick a game winning field goal like he always does, but it will now be for the Colts. He will payback his old team. Colts win and cover.

You might be wondering where my upset pick is. Well it's coming...
Monday night game:
Raiders (+7) upset pick at Seahawks- 2 wins in a row for the Raiders going on 3. Still without Hasselback or Alexander, the Seahawks will be very turnover prone this week. The Raiders had 4 INT's last week against the Steelers. Wallace will make some mistakes and throw at least 2-3 of them. Raiders upset Seahawks in my upset pick of the week.

challenges always accepted and appreciated!!!

I'm not quite sure I want to believe the Indy/NE game will be decided by a field goal. Both sides have problems: NE's secondary and Indy's entire run defense. Both sides will obviously take advantage of that, and I think it will be a pretty high scoring affair. I also think that one of the sides, hopefully New England, will pick up after, let's say, the first half, and cut down the deep passing game at least a little bit, enough to win them the game by a touchdown or so.

31-24 Pats

Would anyone care to explain the spread? I have difficulty understanding it and I know some other readers must as well. It is a very challenging concept.

Each week in every game a team is favored and the other is the underdog. This is determined by Vegas somehow, and they come up with a point value they think is fair to "spot" the other team. Take this for example: Dolphins at Bears (-13.5)...this means that the Bears are favored to win by 13.5 points, and that if you were to be on this game with the spread, and picked Chicago, they would have to win by more than 13.5 for you to win. So basically, it tries to even the games, and adds in a twist for betting games in various situations, because a team could win but still not cover the spread for you.

For the IND/NE game I gotta say that I t will be ended by a field goal but you will see lots of rushing by NE. I'd say the final score would be
IND = 25
NE = 23

So the Pats are going to kick 5 field goals and score a touchdown and be successful on the two point conversion? That's the only way I could think of them scoring 23 that sounded reasonably reasonable. 25 seems more possible, but is still an odd score for a football team. What's the basis for your proposed possible score? This is not meant to be a mean spirited post, I'm just curious as to what brought you to this conclusion.

Actually 25 is less likely than 23. For the record, you can get 2 td's and 3 field goals to get 23. It happens a lot. 25 is a difficult number. 3td's with one 2pt. conv. and a field goal, but that is less likely than my situation for 23. This is also not meant as a "mean spirited" post.
Anyway, I still disgree with the score. It will be 31-28 Colts with a game winning field goal by Vinitieri.

Embarassed ...Well, whatever, my point was that it doesn't seem like a probable score for the game. I'm betting that the Colts will overuse their new aquisition and he'll reagrivate his foot injury, or at least have it affected in some way. I'm predicting something in between 28-14 and 35-21, with the Pats winning. No game winning field goal here.
