As big a Pats fan as I am, I still hope really hope that Ben is okay.
But how can an NFL quarterback be riding a motorcycle without a helmet? There's gotta be something in his contract about that... _________________

The sad part is how he seems like in interviews about his bike riding that he almost liked to brag about not wearing a helmet because it wasn't the "cool" thing to do |

football players generally aren't the smartest so it doesn't surprise me. didn't some baseball player have the same problem last year? even if it's written in his contract to avoid dangerous activities in the off-season do you really think pittsburgh mgmt will do anything to their star QB?
what these idiots fail to realise is that they're setting an example to young kids. while it may not be "cool" to ride with a helmet, it's even less "cool" to give kids the idea that it's ok to ride without one. like it or not, they are role models and should act as such. it's hardly a high price to pay for playing football for a living. the NFL has no discipline control at all and as usual this will be brushed under the rug and forgotten about when the next moron gets caught with a gun/beating his wife/dwi/etc. _________________ the golden days, they went so fast.

If people in cars are not forced to wear a helmet, neither should bike riders. More people are killed in cars each year, than on bikes. Don't think a helmet would save someone flying through a windsheild?
Do people in cars wear their seatbelts? Most don't.
I am so sick of hearing about not wearing a helmet on a motorcycle when most of the people complaining about it are hypocrits that don't wear their seatbelt.
Yes, I am a motorcycle rider, and yes, there are times I choose not to wear a helmet. Smart decision? maybe not, but when helemts are not required in cars, and people don't wear their seatbelts, well, thats like the pot calling the kettle black. |

Then again, what's the ratio of cars to bikes? Because I know I don't see bikers too often...

Don't know where u live, but I see bikes EVERYWHERE.
I am not saying its safe to ride helmetless, but in an accident over 35 mph, you are not going to live too often in a bike accident anyway. Thats why the states have begun lifting the helmet laws. Bike insurance has not even gone up due to new laws not requiring helemts. If it was more dangerous, rates would soar. But they haven't.
I do wear a helmet most of the time, but there are times I choose not to. Luckily I have that choice.
My complaint is just against those that know nothing of riding bikes, never wear their seatbelts in cars, and complain about bikers not wearing helmets, and judge them. Hypocrits I say. But then again, everyone is entitled to their opinion. |

As Pizzaguy started to say, that's a pretty weak argument. There are FAR more cars on the road than motorcycles, so of course that number is going to be higher. Also, I'm 100% sure the rate of injuries is MUCH higher for motorcycle riders compared to people in cars, because they are inherently dangerous.
| Quote: | | Don't think a helmet would save someone flying through a windsheild? |
I'm not sure what your point is here. Helmets saved approximately 1158 lives in 2003; another 640 lives could have saved if helmets were worn.

73% of people in the US wear a seatbelt. http://usgovinfo.about.com/blagencyrelease16.htm
There's a big difference between a seatbelt in a car and a helmet on a biker. Helmets are the only thing protecting motorcycle riders from the ground. When driving 60-70-80 mph, one wrong move and you're usually dead if you're not wearing a helmet. In a car, there are many other safety features that protect you, such as airbags.
Let me ask you this: would you rather get in an accident on the highway going 70mph sitting behind the steering wheel of a car without a seatbelt on, or get in an accident going 70mph on a motorcycle without a helmet?

In 2003, there were 5.4 million motorcycles on the road. In 2004, there were 3,927 fatalities.
In 2003, there were 270 million cars on the road. In 2004, there were 42,800 fatalities.
5.4 million / 3,927 = 1,375 motorcycles/fatality
270 million / 42,800 = 6,308 cars/fatality
So the rate of death on a motorcycle is about 5 times as high as in a car. _________________

Ive never seen anyone fall off the car they were driving.
Here in California, we have a Helmet Law, for just such idiots.
Yes, I used to ride a motorcycle, and yes I wore my helmet. _________________

I heard the same thing and I also heard that it IS illegal to not wear a helmet if you haven't had a motorcycle license for at least 2 years. _________________

Don't know about where you live, but wearing a seatbelt is the law here, so most people do. I always have. It's the same here with wearing a helmet on a bike. It's the law. I agree that both should be required by law and strictly enforced. Screw that "personal freedom" crap in that department. If people aren't smart enough to protect themselves, then give them a little help.
I disagree with you on equating wearing a helmet on a motorcycle to wearing a helmet in a car. In a car you at least have many levels of protection that you don't even come close to having on a bike.
As far as whether or not a helmet would save someone flying through a windshield, perhaps. It certainly has saved many lives when their head smashed into the pavement. _________________

Not for pickup trucks.
Knowing your views on other things, I am quite surprised you feel this way about seatbelts and helmets.
