I was surprised that no one said anything about this (after using the search button)
Great Man U player, arguably the best of his time....any thoughts? _________________ Founder of the SBPA

My dad gave me the article the day (friday), I don't know too much about him, but he seemed damn good. _________________ F.C. København{Rebuilding}

Really sad, he drank himself to death. A real shame and a huge waste. I meant to post but didn't. |

there's a great story about bestie, when he was younger and still playing. after one particular game in london he went out drinking and picked up this gorgeous bird. brought her back to the hotel and well you can guess the rest. during the night, feeling a bit hungry he ordered room service. when the bellboy entered the room he was greeted by the sight of georgie boy and his naked lady friend spread eagled across the bed and the room littered with hundred dollar bills. the bellboy shook his head and said, "george, where did it all go wrong?" to which our hero replied; "if this is wrong, i don't want to be f*****g right!"
other famous george best quotes
"I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars - the rest I just squandered."
"They say I slept with seven Miss Worlds. I didn't - it was only four. I didn't turn up for the other three."
"I used to go missing a lot... Miss Canada, Miss United Kingdom, Miss World."
"I was in for 10 hours and had 40 pints - beating my previous record by 20 minutes." - on a blood transfusion for his liver transplant.
"I was born with a great gift and sometimes with that comes a destructive streak. Just as I wanted to outdo everyone when I played, I had to outdo everyone when we were out on the town."
"He cannot kick with his left foot, he cannot head a ball, he cannot tackle and he doesn't score many goals. Apart from that he's all right." - on David Beckham.
"Pele called me the greatest footballer in the world. That is the ultimate salute to my life." |

I have mixed opinions of this.
Best - a Northern irish guy - arguably the best EVER from NIR (Jennings, Whiteside other very good players).
BUT, his alcoholism and the abuse of the NHS and getting bumped to the top of the transplant list for #2 was unjust. I'd be totally ticked if i needed that lung and was bumped for a celeb.
Shame he'll be known as much for his drinking - maybe moreso - than his playing days (i was young when he quit). _________________ "Chairman Mao has never seen a greater show of red strength." Bill Shankly

Literally the Best player ever to live. A God given genius. I was at a game on saturday (Sheffield Wednesday vs Stoke City) and to a man everybody stood and applauded through the minutes silence. This happened at every ground apart from the premiership on saturday.
That is a mark of true respect for a genius. There are many that say he wasted his talent by retiring at 27 (well actually 34) but when you see the games and goals he was involved in you will see why his talent was there and to be applauded.
RIP George, you were the greatest. _________________ Small Wolves

It's so sad about him, but if you think about what he's done for the sport (maybe one of the first to have a real problem in my opinion) on the other side of the spectrum, you really can't feel sorry for him.
Of course he had a bad side...too bad he got into alcohol instead of steroids like all the baseball players.
Of the greats of Man U I know, here are the rankings I'd put for Top 5:
1. George Best
2. Eric Cantona
3. Peter Schmeichel (i forgot how to spell it after he left)
4. David Becham (you gotta admit, he was good)
5. toss up between Cole, Scholes, everyone on that legendary team that won all 3 Championships (UEFA, FA, Premier League) in one year. _________________ Founder of the SBPA

Wow, I'm really surprised I've never heard of him.
I'll have to do some reading up on him, sounds like he was quite the player. _________________

It might have to do with you not being a soccer fanatic... and not living in England... or maybe he just slipped by unnoticed... |

ah yes that's probably it.
i guess im not a soccer fanatic, but i do tend to know the best players in the world. Maybe I had just figured Pele was the only player who I should know from the 70's. _________________

only a defender who's faced bestie in a game can say that he slipped by unnoticed. he was one of the greatest players ever to dribble a ball. the only shame is that he never got to show his stuff in a world cup.
the archetypal flawed genius if ever there was one.
if anyone is interested in reading more about him, i highly recommend this book ...

george best was the david beckham of his day, the first real "superstar" of the domestic (read english) game. when he joined manchester united he was very young and naive, and the almost instant fame was too much to handle. unfortunately for him there had never been such praise and popularity aimed at a football player and no one, not least of all bestie himself knew how to deal with it. he was too young, had too much money and no one to guide him along his way and protect him from the the circling vultures (when someone becomes so big there are always those people eager to cut them back down).
i had the good fortune to meet him once, at a republic of ireland v. northern ireland game many years ago. needless to say, he was blitzed at the time.
here's a good montage of news clips, goals and images from his life. it's not recommended for those on a dial up connection as it's quite a large file.

See with me and my HATE for Manu is all because i hate to lose to them. I'd prolly hate to see ManU get relegated, as the 2 matches/ season are usually a high watchable game worldwide.
Now if you talk Everton - I REALLY HATE THAT SIDE - I don't care where liverpool finish in the league (if they don't win it) just as long as Everton are lower.
As for King Kenny, he was a beg buy from Celtic to Liverpool back when Hamburg were buying Keegan. Not a bad buy i think. And to this day, every time a Managerial rumour starts his name always appears. Will be a VERY sad day if he was to ever leave us. (He's the reason i wore #7 for so many years). _________________ "Chairman Mao has never seen a greater show of red strength." Bill Shankly

as a fellow reds fan, i live for the day the bluenoses are relegated. when it comes to my favorite liverpool player, without question jan molby.

at one of his first training sessions with united, the coach had to call him out and ask him to untie the string that was tethered from his boot (cleat) to the ball. his control was that good that it appeared as though the ball was connected to him in some way! |

did anybody see the CNN videos of his funeral today? there were literally TENS OF THOUSANDS of people chanting the ManU fight song and "Bestie"...
There is absolutely no other football, hockey, basketball, or american athlete that has, will, or ever get that much attention let alone when they're dead.

Always good to see people lining up to pay respect like that.
I think there are only a handful of people that will get as much (if not more) if they die - Pele's death will be a world shocker, and in my opinion the only sports althete EVERYBODY knows everywhere. _________________ "Chairman Mao has never seen a greater show of red strength." Bill Shankly
