I've stopped by SmallBall chat a lot and for several weeks. Chippy has been there and hasn't said a word. I'm convinced he's dead. I think we should all doff our caps and sing a dirge in his memory: (With apologies to Rogers & Hammerstein)

Then he'd say, "Chip was the most misunderstood man in this territory
People used to think he was a mean ugly fella and called him a dirty skunk and an ornery pig stealer

There beat a heart as big as all outdoors
Chippy loved his fellow man

He loved the birds of the forest
And the beasts of the fields
He loved the mice and the vermin in the barn
And he treated the rats like equals (which was right)

Only . . . only he never let on
And nobody ever knowed it
