Rita... |
|
|
Anybody live in the danger zones for hurricane Rita? It seems to be on a course for Texas. I live on the north side of Houston and I am hoping I don't take too much wind damage and or flooding. _________________

I forgot to mention that anyone using FireFox will probably have to open that in Internet Explorer to hear the sound (although the sound isn't very important). _________________

Really? For me it says it's missing the Apple Quicktime plug-in, but when I try to install it it tells me I have to manually do so. Funny thing is, I have Quicktime on this computer...
So you're saying you could hear the music too? Although, as I said before the music is pretty unimportant, it's the image that makes it hi-llarious! _________________

Don't know whether to commend the people of Texas coast or condemn the fact Bush seems to give a crap now.......never mind i'll do both.
Why is it when Katrina was barrelling down on New orleans (days away) he seemed more interested in planning a trip to the Northwest to see the troops going to the Middle East.
Yet when Rita threatens Texas he seems to be bothered more. Home state maybe? So what.....he has 50 of them to care about.
To this day i think Bush should be fired for the fiasco of Katrina.
Back to Rita, I seriously hope the USA doesn't recieve anymore of Mother Natures Wrath anytime soon, you guys have had more in a few short weeks than many nations get in a century (only nation comparable seems to be Bangladesh when the Ganges bursts yearly). Good luck all involved. _________________ "Chairman Mao has never seen a greater show of red strength." Bill Shankly

After Katrina more people are leaving Texas. If Katrina never hit land, and Rita does hit Texas and is as big as Katrina - The same resaults may have happened there, not in New Orleans. It was the flooding that did the most damage to New Orleans, not the hurricane.
I still can't imagine not leaving New Orleans after they said it was going to be big - Cat5. They have talked for years about that, and what would happen. I know some people couldn't, but I know many of them could!!
I still don't see how it's the Government / Presidents fault? _________________

Not blaming them for the Hurricane itself, but what they did afterwards was a joke. The whole debacle of New Orleans was an embarrasment being sent around the world........"The Worlds richest nation lowered to the standards that is common place in wartorn Africa".
I'm going to compare 2 disasters, hope it doesn't offend anybody.
9/11 - Brutal attack, was a disaster nobody saw coming. US did what they had to do afterwards.......swiftly.
Katrina - Documented TV/ satelite pictures showed what was coming. Granted, people can't be forced out of their homes, but George W. and his government should've done more before the storm hit. Sent many troops to the surrounding areas to move in INSTANTLY when storm faded. I'm not sure if Rita's storm surge would save New Orleans if it hit there.
Comparing 9/11 to Katrina is a little vast, but both should've had the same outcome after the fact. I wonder if it was LA (or another large US City) the results would be the same. _________________ "Chairman Mao has never seen a greater show of red strength." Bill Shankly

Its not fair to assume the same outcome after the fact for a couple of reasons. One, it's alot different when you're dealing with a catostrophic hurricane. Nobody knew the entire infrastructure of the gulf coast would be destroyed. After 9/11, their was still an infrastructure of police and firemen. Two, it was easier to rally together after 9/11, because we had someone else to blame. With Katrina, there is no one to blame but mother nature. |

I think everyone knew it was going to be big, but I bet A LOT of New Orlean residents had lived through many storms, and didn't think that it would ever get that bad...
The Levy broke, N.O. was under 20 feet of water is some parts. We were caught off guard by it's damage. You are right though, it woke up our Government.
NOW, on Rita. I think it's downright SILLY to assume Bush is only doing this for his home state. Pure hogwash. Of course he's going to do more after what happened in New Orleans and Mississippi. Do we expect him to do less for Texas because it might look like he's playing favorites.
Come on now. |

Add to that the fact that US Gov't can not send troops or help without permission of the State Governor. The LA Governor refused Bush's offer two days before Katrina hit. The Texas Governor did request federal government help ahead of time. That's why they are already mobilized. _________________ Waiting for a good quote |

I live in TX - I am hoping that 100% of the possible "evacuees" do just that and are safe and sound by Fri. night (since the estimated land fall is Sat. morning).
Now, I am not going to play the blame game just state a fact I heard last night on the World Nightly news.
The levees (in question in N.O.) seem to be have been designed / created incorrectly. They were not designed to withstand the force and amount of water that a Cat. 4 / 5 would send their way.
Why? Well the military that is helping re-construct and repair the areas damaged have stated this: The levees are designed to be 6 - 7 feet above the water level and no more. This allows the levee to withstand the pressure created by the extra water during storms and spread it evenly and resist structural damage.
But the some of the levees in question (that broke and helped flood N.O.) were at least 10 - 12 feet above water level. That extra 4 - 6 feet is what led to the levees eventual structural failure and flooding that happened when they broke.
***not word for word but from an interview with an Army (possibly nat. Guard) Commander in N.O. who is directly involved with the repair effort. In fact the Army is installing barriers now behind / in front of levees now that will be about 11 feet high in case the "Rita" rain storms exceed the norm and send more water thru the canals / levee ways. These are not the repair of the levees themselves but an extra temporary re-enforcement to help in the possible "Rita" rainstorms.
So, relief efforts may be a "Clusterbomb" and FEMA / Fed. Govt / local Govt may be out to lunch when it comes to responding / preparing prob. --- but the prev. design of levees, canals, buildings, etc.. are also to blame for failing the people (of N.O.) in their greatest time of need.
just my opinion for what it worths ..

The opposite I think, some could and most who were able to did leave, others were just stubborn. But the rest is the controversy. The ones who did not have the ability to leave is the thing here. The poverty there is shocking especially after an event like this uncovers it. I've heard the federal government gave billions (not sure exact amount) of dollars to the Louisiana area to help the poverty issue but the result is obvious that the money did not do what it was meant to.
