I'm kind of an all around rock kind of person.

I like my harder rock like Linkin Park, Foo Fighters (might not fit in here)
I like metal like Hatebreed, Metallica (b4 they got all sissy and old and stuff)
There's also emo/metal or soemthing like Avenged Sevenfold and Atreyu.
You can't beat the classics---Queen, AC/DC, Motley Crue

I like some country.. as long as someone isnt singing a song to/about their dog (a joke, lol some country is ok, but some just isnt IMO)

Rap, I like Nelly, and 1 or 2 songs by lil Jon, Chingy is OK too, but I dont like much more than that.

I guess im the average "white guy" LOL, like 1 or 2 songs, and hate the rest Rolling Eyes

www.last.fm/user/GNAW will show you what bands I listen to and such. But if you're to lazy to go there, my favorite bands are:
1. Megadeth
Fav CD: Rust In Peace
Song: Tornado of Souls

2. Children of Bodom
CD: Follow the Reaper
Song: Hate Me!

3. Dream Theater
CD: Images and Words
Song: Glass Prison

4. Exodus
CD: Bonded by Blood (although their new one is awesome)
Song: Raze or A lesson in violence

5. Mercyful Fate
CD: Don't Break the Oath
Song: The Afterlife

meh, even though no one cares at all and I'd be surprised if anyone knows anything about these bands ('cept dream theater).

And I've played Guitar for about 2 years and currently sing for/play guitar for a thrash/progressive metal band and I would post some MP3's but I'm not happy with my singing on the last demo we did so I'll post some when we get some good ones recorded.

Fav Song: Comfortably Numb

Led Zeppelin
Fav Album: Physical Graffiti
Fav Song: Too many...

The Beatles
Fav Album: Abbey Road
Fav Song: Helter Skelter

Anyone who likes Simple Plan needs to die. I despise emo-pop-fake rock music (IE, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, etc.). In fact, emo in itself mostly stinks, IMO. Linkin Park and Staind are, I must admit, both VERY emo bands. But they're "harder" then, say, Simple Plan. Admittingly, Staind is actually a pretty cruddy band; Aaron Lewis, however, might be my favorite vocalist of any band out there now. And at least his emo stuff actually sounds honest and heartfelt, unlike pre-packaged Simple Plan crap. /End rant

I do like Linkin Park, 311, Staind, Disturbed, Chevelle, S.O.A.D., Avenged Sevenfold, Skindred, Mudvayne, Seether, and at least some songs from Nine Inch Nails, Slipknot, Audioslave, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Limp Bizkit (older stuff, preferably), CKY, 10 Years, HIM, Cradle of Filth, etc...stuff like that, although mostly not real hard stuff.

Not a big rap fan, but some of the bands I like (311, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit) do incorporate some rap into them). I loved the Jay Z/Linkin Park songs, and I'm a fan of Nelly too. Even some Eminem stuff. But mostly, I'll stick with my alternative rock kind of stuff.

Linkin park.. DEATH METAL?? Neutral Are you familiar with the genre?

If you would like some truly hardcore bands that fit well into the undergroundish genre of death metal, try...

Meshuggah
Strapping Young Lad
Arch Enemy
Morbid Angel
Diabolic
Haste
Shadows Fall
Grave
Dismember
Dimmu Borgir
Sinister
Gorgoth
Cryptopsy
Carnal Forge
Glass Casket
Radiation 5
Samael

Am I saying Linkin Park is a bad band? Certainly not; I used to listen to it some. But Linkin Park is as much death metal as Snoop Dogg is country.

Im afraid he has a point there. Im not sure what exactly LP should be listed as, but its not even close to metal, much less death metal.

Meshuggah - Actually considered Technical Thrash.
SYL - Had an AD on MTV, not very "underground"
Arch Enemy - Very good, not at all underground.
Haste - Haste is a hardcore band...
Shadows Fall - SHADOWS FALL!? DEATH METAL!? Hmmmm......
Dimmu Borgir - not death metal...
Gorgoth - um do you mean gorgoroth or something? if so they aren't a death metal band.
Samael - not death metal

Yes, so please don't recomend me anymore "underground death metal", thanks.

i think LP's first CD--hybrid theory--was the best with One Step Closer, Runaway, Papercut

they're not emo...emo ppl cry in the dark and hate themselves...emo is like a wannabe punk, emo is short for EMOTIONAL ROCK

if you take emotional rock literally, emo is every kind of rock ever created.

but LP is not death metal, they're not emo...they've got a genre of their own.

Ok.. First off.. Let's get our english correct Smile

I said, "the undergroundish genre of death metal." Is death metal an undergroundish genre? Yes, of course it is. When you ask most people what the most hardcore music they've heard is, they say things like "Oh, definitely Atreyu! Those guys are just CRAZY!" or something like that. They never say, "Check out Skinlab." Is death metal undergroundish? Yes, of course it is. Not all death metal bands are as "unknown" as others -- but they are all fairly unknown to the general public.

So on that point, maybe we're defining "underground" differently.. So I'll give that one to you. When I say "underground," I am meaning bands that most people have no idea who the *cough* they are.

Now, let's get to the main point here.

I find it most amusing that to disprove most of my band categories, you simply say, "It's not death metal." I liked the way you categorized Meshuggah... and I'm not being sarcastic there. That was nicely executed. Your disproval for some of my other recommendations, however -- such as "not death metal..." are very unsound and unproven. If you could do for the rest what you did for Meshuggah, that would be neat, and I'd say, "good job."

On the "underground" point -- please define the way that term is used in your area so we can better determine what we're talking about here.

I like it how you only "disproved" 52% of the bands I listed, btw (and that's a literal (though approximated) figure).

I'll give Samael to you. Some of their songs do sound more poppishly influenced than your common death metal.

When I said Gorgoth, I meant Gorgoth.
I'll also bow down on the Shadows Fall point, too, even though their style does have a few of the DM elements.

The bands I will not conceed to you, though, are:

1. Strapping Young Lad
2. Arch Enemy

While these bands may be more well-known in the death metal scene, I refuse to decategorize them from being slightly undergroundish, because they are generally not known -- even among "hardcore" kids.

3. Dimmu Borgir

I can't think of anything other to call them but death metal. You don't want to call that screamo, do you!? Good luck pairing them with Silverstein.

4. Gorgoth

Yes, there is Gorgoroth, and then there is Gorgoth. You might not be able to find much music by them.. I search that on WinMX a lot, and don't come up with much.

But my original point remains... LINKIN PARK!? DEATH METAL!?!? See you at the Rascall Flats + Snoop Dogg concert.

Ouch...you still havn't caught on that I was kidding with the Linkin Park being Death Metal Wink

Anyways...

Arch Enemy - Strapping Young Lad: I like both these bands (Devin Townsend is THE man), but SYL had an AD on MTV!!! C'mon dude, they are probably the least underground death metal band ever. But yea Arch Enemy is pretty tight, I still need to get Doomsday Machine.

Dimmu Borgir - Black metal and symphonic crazziness. I really don't like them.

Gorgoth - I guess their to underground for me to find them on Metal-Archives...

No, you probably won't be seeing me at the next Rascal Flats - Snoop Dogg concert. But you might've seen me at GIGANTOUR (megadeth, dream theater, nevermore, symphony X, yes it was the best concert ever) or maybe you will be seeing me in November at the Children of Bodom show.

Also, I dont really listen to Death Metal, but if you are EVER going to recomend DM bands to people, and you don't mention 'Death' in that list. Your entire list becomese invalid. It also doesn't help if you mention Shadows Fall in that same list.

EDIT EDIT EDIT - just saw the part in your post where you *hinted* that friggin SKINLAB (!) was supposdely the most hardcore band you could think. Oh wow......atleast say something like The Berzerker or others along those lines. But please not some wanna be thrash mallcore band.

Tons more

Dear god, we are the same age and you are implying that Metallica is hardcore and that you're too young to listen to them. Wow-zers.

(not saying Metallica is bad, amazing 'till the black album.)

i think LP's first CD--hybrid theory--was the best with One Step Closer, Runaway, Papercut

they're not emo...emo ppl cry in the dark and hate themselves...emo is like a wannabe punk, emo is short for EMOTIONAL ROCK

if you take emotional rock literally, emo is every kind of rock ever created.

but LP is not death metal, they're not emo...they've got a genre of their own.

I agree, I did like Hybrid Theory more then any of their other stuff. It certainly had a much harder feel to it, and oddly enough, the 3 songs you mentioned are probably my 3 favorite Linkin Park songs.

That said, they're still emo-rock. You're right, if you take the lyrics of almost any band and really look at them hard, you could probably make a case for ANY band being classified as "emo". While bands like Linkin Park and Staind can hide their ultra emotional-rock lyrics behind a harder background and/or screaming vocals (although if you're heard Staind's new CD, Lewis really has a few softer songs on it that don't even try to hide anything), it is still, in my opinion, emo music. As I said, you could argue that any rock music is emotional-rock, I guess. But bands like Staind and Linkin Park DEFINITELY are emotional-rock; if those same lyrics were song by Simple Plan, you'd call the song a "whiney, cry-me-a-river self-hate fest"...which is pretty much what Linkin Park is. But man, do they do it good!

Mikey, I used the word "emo" in 3 posts, all three discussing music, and all three talking about bands that are arguably emo bands. I don't see how that makes me love the word itself. I'd say you're using bad logic, but honestly, you're not using any logic at all, period. It's not really highschool slang or anything...it's a very commonly used word to describe a genre of music.

I still want you to define "underground" for me bc I seriously believe that we're running on diff definitions here :p

You now actually officially have my envy.. lol Very Happy

Noooo, lol I wasn't meaning to imply them the most hardcore :p God only knows I heard one of their songs, bought that one CD with the half-mutilated guy on front (I can't even think of the album name), and was drastically disappointed :p. The one song I heard of theirs was actually pretty awesome.. But then I buy a CD and it ends up sounding more like Hatebreed than what I was EXPECTING... So don't worry.. Smile I was just giving an example..

I do wanna clarify something, though.. I did make a mistake up there.. I thought you were 100% serious when you classified LP as death metal, and I'm sick and tired of people who want to talk about "hardcore" bands and say that bands like, say, System of a Down are "super hardcore." I have a friend I talk to that once told me, "Yeah, my boyfriend is into super hardcore death metal like Saliva." I just stared at her for maybe four years before I realized she had actually said that.. (At least, I think that's the band she mentioned.. It was something totally NOT hardcore in the least.)

So, once and for all, here's my formal appology: Sorry to Henny for misinterpreting your sarcastic statement as an actual statement :p!! (And, consequently, sorry for misjudging you as a hardcore wannabe instead of a true metal fan.. thank God for the few people out there who have actually heard of Meshuggah, Nevermore, and the like..
