How do I find which position is right for each player. Example, I know that the best catching skill should be playing left field. What about the 2nd best catcher or best thrower? What skills should the shortstop have?

you're nuts! lol SS 5th in throwing?

This is the way I position my players.. I dont worry about catch that much, since I train them in that skill on a regular basis anyway!

3rd base, 1st in throwing.
ss, 2nd in throwing
lf, 3rd throing
cf, 4th throwing
2nd, 5th throwing
rf, 6th throwing
1st 7th throwing
c, 8th throwing

Maybe when you get up to the higher PL's, when guys mostly have 12 lefty teams or 6 lefty teams, RF should throw in the top 3. Anyway, he is the top thrower on my team.

So you guys basically pick your positions based on their throwing skill??

I'm no baseball statistics pro, though, so I'm not criticizing you Smile Don't worry about THAT Wink

Mostly, I've had my dad help me pick stuff out.. He spent quite a while with me going over the stats and making the batting lineup. It was cool :p

the problem i have found with picking positions based on your knowledge of real life baseball is it doesn't apply to smallball as in in real life you need you best catcher at first base then maybe your catcher ...in smallball these two guys only need the minimum catch skill to do their jobs..... i coach and play real ball and this adjustment was had to make at first

Maybe I'm crazy on this one but I watched a certain player play right field a few games. When playing there it seemed he would drop the ball regularly and did it three times in one game. My team at the time was 7-8* and I'm pretty sure that everybody's catching skill was not that horrible. Anyway, I have never put that player in right field again and have not seen any dropped balls from him either. Could be my imagination or that player just isn't good at right field. So watch your players and see how well they perform at each position.

i've got to say, positions, to me, are based mostly on running and throwing. i have a pler wh is the best at throwing and isnt as well at running (he sux at running) so i put him SS. my outfielders have the best defence but if they dont have running skills and only throwing they go to second or SS.
As far as what MLTHMP said, 3rd baseman, IMO, should have the worst throwing besides catcher and 1st. while he does have a longer way to throw all the way to 1st base than SS or 2nd baseman, the ball doesnt come to him very often, it was mentioned B4 that 1st and 3rd dont get the ball very often and whenever i watch my games (4 A.M. and i am really bored) i notice that they weren't lying.

I think ss is one of the most important spots on the field, and his speed has to good. He has to cover the holes, and has to throw well. Also be a decent fielder. He should be close to the top ranks on all three areas, just my opinion thou. Laughing

I think i saw something somewhere in the forums about players having their own positions, that is why your player was so poor in that position, i 've found this as my best fielder was put in CF but when i moved him to SS or LF he kept dropping the ball or missing slow rollers, but in CF he never misses a trick Wink

I dont really agree with that.. I usually have to change my positins every few days.. ask their skills vary, so do their positions..

If players aren't in the "right" position will that effect if they move up a star level?

besides the pitcher (meaning the person u have trained all the way to 10* in pitching) being on the mound, no. i could put my really bad 1st baseman in LF and they wouldn't change star ratings. One of the reasons that the Iliad aren't considered the BEST team and the most Skilled team

C: Doesn't need any fielding, really. Anything he gets is for * rating purely

1B: Arm shouldn't be an issue here, although you should make sure his glove is somewhat ok.

SS: Needs to be near the top in catching and near the top in throwing.

2B: Similar to SS, but to a lesser extent. I LOVE having a 2B with a good arm for double plays personally. Catching is less important.

3B: Very good throwing. Doesn't need a good glove. Rarely does glovework effect em.

LF: Needs a cannon arm, and a good glove. Outfield errors will KILL you.

CF: Arm isn't as important as LF, glove is MORE important then LF. Speed helps here too, just like in real baseball.

RF: Again, like the other OF's, a very good arm helps. Needs a solid glove, but not as vital as LF or CF.

You may have a player who was created to be BEST at a certain position, due to having a high potential for throwing or catching, but mlthmp is right, you wont find a player making a ton of errors in Left if you moved him from 1B, unless his fielding rating is really bad.
