My Personal Quest |
|
|
I have started on the South Beach Diet last Tuesday. I started out at 278lbs. On Friday I had lost 10 lbs. I just weighed in a few minutes ago at 264 and ofcourse today is Sunday October 3rd. To keep me motivated and strong in my quest to become a normal size again I am going to post my weight on here everyday.(As long as the darn phone company doesn't disconnect me again...lol)
Here is my list so far on a daily basis:
9/28 278 lbs
9/29 274 lbs
9/30 272 lbs
10/1 270 lbs
10/2 264 lbs
10/3 264 lbs(I was depressed when I hadn't lost more since yesterday, but my wife told me that this was perfectly normal)
CD(The future skinny dude)

| Good luck buddy, and keep us posted! If its public, it'll help keep you accountable. Dont worry about not losing every day. With me at least, I have a layer that I can lose (and gain back) easily, then another layer that I need to work a little harder at. |

From what I read, it looks like the 1st 2 weeks of the diet are the hardest, eliminating fruit, bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, sugar, alcohol, and baked goods. Keep at it man. Looks like a great diet, and hope you feel more proud of yourself when you're through. _________________ Quote of the Week:

Good luck, CD. I've been eating junk food for the last 15 years, and I weigh 130 lbs. _________________

Let's just say I eat a lot of meat(by itself) and nuts. I can have just about any kind of nuts. I buy the mixed nuts a lot. But have to read the label. Even some of those have a little sugar. _________________

Good luck with your quest. I would advise you to be careful, as you seem to be losing a lot of weight really fast. 14 lbs in 5 days is an unhealthy pace. Are you sure you're eating enough? Are you exercising? Just 20 minutes more exercise a day will really help. And definitely don't worry about not losing everyday. Expect to gain on some days. If you're realistic, you have a better chance of attaining your goal.
I'm trying to lose some weight as well. I've put on WAY too many pounds the last few months and need to get them off, baby. I blame the Starbucks peanut butter oat bars.
What's your goal weight? And height....not goal height, but actual height...if you think you're gonna lose height, you're CRAZY! _________________ "I can resist anything except temptation" - Oscar Wilde |

Yes, I am losing a lot fast in the beginning. I gave up Dr. Pepper and that was the hardest. Anyway, from what I've been told that is why I'm dropping weight so fast...atleast temporarily. Yes, I actually eat a lot. About five to six times a day. I get full on smaller amounts now too.
No, I don't exercise. I was a big fella before but the reason I have gotten so heavy now is because of a lower back injury. I did go through 3 months of physical therapy with no improvement to my back or right leg pain. I gained 40 lbs in the first three months after the injury. I'm considered permanently partially disabled now. So there isn't much exercise I can do.(Nerve damage in my lower spine causes pain after only a few minutes of activity...even walking) Anyway, I'm trying to walk as much as I can for exercise but I walk so slow it doesn't do much good in the quest to lose weight.
Actually, I HAVE gotten a little bit shorter because of the injury...roflol I'm just under six foot tall now. My goal is to lose One hundred pounds.(Good timing with SmallBall's 100th season. Really is what gave me the idea of making this public) The doc says my ideal weight is 175. I'm a pretty stocky(big boned) fella anyway so I figured I'd keep it simple and just aim for 178. 86 lbs to go. I would just be tickled pink to just get below 200. Even that would help out with the whole back pain deal.
Ok, I'll shut up now. Didn't mean this to become CD's autobiography...lol My wife always tells me I just don't know when to shut up.

You should try some water aerobics. The weightlessness would help alleviate the pressure. Even just getting in a pool and moving around for a while would help ya.

You should make some milestone goals so that it doesn't seem so big and overwhelming. I've seen my sisters have these lofty goals and sabatoge themselves because they seem SO BIG. I think you'll be amazed how much 40 lbs off will help you. As your weight decreases, any therapy that you might get will probably be more effective. And you'll be able to exercise more.

Update: A discouraging day yesterday but it's tough to break my spirit. I weigh in at lunch time(fully dressed) and yesterday I was wearing jeans instead of shorts. Atleast that gave me a little comfort. I must have picked the last couple of days to retain a lot of water or something. Anyway here it is:

I tried the no eating thing at one time (well every other day eating), I ended up losing 40lbs in 1.5 months but I gained it all back when I went back to daily eating despite watching what I ate. Little did I know that my body was holding onto all of that fat/calories from the day that I decided to eat. I gained it back despite working out daily.
At that time I was also fluctuating from 264 to 255 then somehow I would be back up to 260 the next day without doing anything different. I eventually got down to a consistent 245 and didn't go over 250 for a week so I figured I would go back to a normal eating habit while still working out daily...I gained 30lbs back from eating 3 (actually) healthy meals a day.
I gained all of my weight from Creatine 4 years ago. I was at a solid (and I mean solid) 220 when I played rugby. I screwed up my back being in the bottom of a horribly executed scrum and heard my back crack...well the doctors at the university are stupid and messed it up even worse. To make a long story short I coudln't work out or do anything for 2 weeks and gained 20 lbs in those 2 weeks because of that damn Creatine.
All down hill from there
Anyway I don't know anything about South Beach so maybe you can enlighten me a bit about that...whether a PM or here Working in the Corporate World screwed me up by sitting all day...the Restaurant World (cooking) is what kept me in order. |

That's one of the scariest things about rugby. I was in a bad scrum because of a couple new guys and some overzealous players. Fortunately, everyone was ok. Now our team always request to do a practice scrum against the other team just to be sure. Although i'm not playing this semester, I wonder every day if the pain i feel in my neck is from playing rugby or not.

that's only because you're a young kid... Once your metabolism starts to go down, you won't be so lucky. Trust me, some of my friends from high school (three years ago) were skinny, but now i just don't know what happened to them. I would imagine you would eat less in college, right? |

Do you also get prettier the more you eat?
Anyways, some people just have high metabolisms and always will. But watch your cholesterol. You don't wanna be skinny and healthy looking and have a freaking heart attack. _________________ "I can resist anything except temptation" - Oscar Wilde |

10/5 270 lbs.
Little discouraged but I AM wearing jeans again today.(Any excuse is better than none...lol) It's beginning to get cold here in Missouri now. I'm tempted to move my 'weigh in' to the evening hours right after I undress and before I don my pajamas...lol. Atleast that way I won't have any excuses. Well, then on the other hand....there is that water gain...roflol
Seriously, I'm going to start weighing in at night so I have a constant and know exactly what I weigh. I'll weigh again this evening and post it if I have time to get on the net.

How about some before and after photos CD?
Just a couple things: I agree with Sol (no surprise there) about setting some minor goals first. Maybe a first goal of just getting below 250 (a fairly round number). After that, maybe just gun for 225. Taking it step by step should be at least a lot less mentally stressing. Also remember there WILL be days where you not only don't lose anything, but actually go up. That happens, and is in fact more healthy for you then just losing a ton all at once.
Actually, the best thing to do might be to make a weight goal for every week (something small and easily obtainable, of course). You probably wont reach that goal every week, but again, it should be less stressing on you.
Sol, the comment about Flingz=priceless. LMAO.
As for me, I'm only 16, so I'm still growing (not much more height really, but I haven't completely filled out yet). I can eat almost anything I want and not gain weight (only way I've been able to gain weight is by adding muscle, actually). But like Sol also mentioned, still gotta watch out for what you eat. I've heard some horror stories of young, seemingly fit people getting heart attacks. Scares the living crap out of me. _________________

You should weigh in the morning after going to the bathroom and before eating. It is the most acurate time to measure your weight. At night, you still have some more weight added on by the food you ate for afternoon snack and or dinner. _________________

It's really not as hard as you'd think, as long as you don't break off of it for a day. That's the worst.
I have never had a real weight problem, but my cholesterol has been rather high at times, as have some other things. So at one point, I had my dad put me on a much healthier (albeit less tasty) diet, not for the sake of losing weight, but for the sake of being healthier. It's not hard at all. What broke me off of it was "giving myself a treat" one day. That made me desire that food even MORE, and completely screwed me up. _________________

Keep at it CD...I've been on the Atkins way of life for about the last 4 years. I lost 50lbs from 245 back down to 195...I've gained about 10lbs during my wife's pregnancy...but it's coming back off again now that I've gotten back on track. It's a tough road to hoe...so if you need any advice...just give me a shout. If you can be disciplined enough to train your teams every day for this long...you can stay on the diet. Think of it as wasted TP if you cheat...lol.
Good Luck,

I decided to weigh in every evening. I know that I will be at my heaviest at that time of day. I did that on purpose... if I weigh everynight at the same time, after the meals for the day are over, then I don't get my hopes up by doing it earlier in the day. Speaking of which here is my weight from this evening.
10/5 262 lbs. WOO HOO
Those darn blue jeans weighed a lot more that I thought! I weighed in shortly after my evening meal too...hehe
I will try to get a picture if I can...before I lose much more...and post it. Thank you all so much for supporting me in this venture. I'll get the job done yet.

GOOD JOB MAN!!!!
I'm personally on the "Dr. Angus Diet!"
If I lost as much weight as you have, I'd probably be in the hospital...
Keep up the good work man!

It's not the only way, but it's the healthiest and most effective way to keep it off. But as he said, he's not really able to exercise too much lately because of his injury. I think the jumpstart will be good for him.
CD, you will probably want to figure out a meal plan for yourself for when you get to your goal weight as these fad diets are usually not too healthy for you to be on longterm. _________________ "I can resist anything except temptation" - Oscar Wilde |

about this picture, all I have to say is: "Screw the Dr Pepper, I'll take the girl and that should help lose weight... I'll stop there before I get a warning!
Best of luck Cheerfuldude on your diet, god knows how hard it is. Great job getting where you are now, keep it up. The only advice I could give you is this, based on my own experiences: Once you get to the weight you want, keep your current diet and add to it slowly. Don't go back to your regular eating habits right away. Just my 2 cents.
Keep up the great work

Todays weigh in:
10/6 264 lbs
Gained a couple since last night but I've still got a positive additude. Today is the tenth day in my quest and for the first time since it started I feel the determination to see it through.

I seem to be going in the wrong direction at the moment but I'm still not letting myself be discouraged.

| Have you looked in a mirror much lately? Some people find it discouraging, but sometimes you see a noticable difference right away. Remember, if you suddenly dont eat very much, your metabolism slows a bit to store food longer. You should start losing weight again very soon. |

No, I'm afraid to look in the mirror...lol I might work up the courage for that soon though.

I admit.... I broke from my diet a bit today(for the first time). After I finished my disability eval. I stopped at Wendy's and bought a hamburger and ate every darn bite of it. Bread, ketchup and all. This doesn't mean I'm giving up on the diet/quest. Just a momentary set back. Anyway, I may gain for a few days now because of it.

Excellent attitude. It seems that what kills most diets are when someone slips, they think they failed and have to give up. But yes, it was a slip. No worries. Wendys is a better slip than some places, that's for sure. _________________ "I can resist anything except temptation" - Oscar Wilde |

I forgot to post my weigh in last night.
10/9 264 lbs
10/10 266 lbs.
Seem to be stuck in this area right now but I'm assured that this is just normal. I'm really amazed that I didn't gain a bunch after my momentary set back.

Yay, CD. Keep going at it, man.
I'm on the Atkins' Plan (notice I don't call it a diet, because it really isn't...). I've been on it since around January. I, at that time, was very obese, and around the weight range of 235-240 at the age of 15. I was a very healthy kid, though, despite that. Anywho, I felt that I needed a lifestyle change to get into shape - like I was when I was wayyyyy younger (3 or 4). And I met this kid my age that had lost 60 lbs on Atkins', so I was like, wow, I'll try this. I did, and low and behold....
I am now very slender at the weight of 175. And I feel better than ever.
I occassionally fall off the plan, but, it happens to the best of us.
Keep going at it, ! |

10/17 260lbs WOO HOO
I didn't weigh for a couple days there...partially because I had too many irons in the fire and partially because I was a bit discouraged. I feel better now...hehe That's my lowest weight yet and makes 18 lbs. total loss.

Today(and yesterday's) weigh in:
10/18 261 lbs.
10/19 260 lbs.
Still feeling positive about the whole thing. Got excited in the beginning when I was dropping several pounds a day but as several of you have pointed out. It isn't healthy to drop off too fast. So, even if I only lose a few a week....I'll still be happy.
