Looking for suggestions on helping beginners with SmallBall |
|
|
Do you have any ideas how we could make it easier for people to understand SmallBall and how to play it? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

First of all, they need to come equipped with at least some level of education above that of a moldy piece of bread. After that, I think you guys have done a great job. There are so many tools that new players can use to get their questions answered. If a newbie takes the time to read the tutorial areas they should be pretty well set as far as getting a good start. I think that when anyone bashes a question posted in the "Beginners" forum they should immediately be flogged no matter how stupid the question is (within reason of course). Newbies need to feel welcome when they come to the Beginners forum. _________________

I agree with Beaner, there are already so many ways of getting information. You have tutorials, web pages from users devoted to help on smallball, forums and lots of people who answer questions. I dont think there is much more you can do other than holding their hand and teaching them 1 on 1. Even then some of them will never learn. This game takes patience and dedication. Most of the people who say they cant "get it" or want help are really just looking for a quick fix for their team. _________________ "Oderint dum metuant" |

The easiest thing I can think of is for SmallBall to give me an endless supply of TP tickets.
Everytime someone asks a question, I will provide an answer. (Of course I cant guarantee that they will be accurate) and reward myself with a little TP.
But seriously - I think the fact that y'all link to several places - FAQ, Getting Started, and a multiude of user sites (Not to mention the Newbies Forum) Give new players a great start. I got most of my best tips by stopping by user sites and chatting while getting stomped in the contest of the day.
Of course the TP idea has merit!! |

One thing will help when I get off my lazy butt and finish what I started and get it all set up on a web site. What I have done so far will help to get a team started with the st. Look for TW to have all this in the next couple of days. I have re-done/edited my info for the st to start a team off on the right foot and not to hurt your feelings commish, but will be much better than what's on the SB site.
What I plan on having will be very complete and will be up to TW to make sure that it is easy to navigate through. I believe that it will be a big help and when it's done I want it picked to pieces. _________________

| I think bring back the old Home Page Archives would be a good idea. I know I viewed some back issues for some helpful hints such as player positioning and training techniques. |

I agree with this statement from Beaner. I've seen alot of Newbies (no offense to you Newbies) flamed for asking "beginner" questions and get totally harassed for not being smart enough to know the answer or taking the time to look the answer up.
Beginners need to feel that they're as welcome here as the rest of us. _________________

I agree with both of you. We were all newbies at one point in time. |

ITs great |
|
|
I found all the tutorials and FAQ's great.
I have only been playing this for 19 days and my team is already 6*.
Maybe after you download it it could automatically take you to some tutorials or links to help site.
But otherwise it's fantastic. |

| I don't know how much more you could really help new teams. To succeed at SmallBall you need to have a good understanding of how the game of baseball works. I haven't read all of the HPNs but the ones I have read have been incredibly helpful, especially the articles from owners...that's the best way to learn how to play SmallBall. Getting tips from fellow SmallBallers is the key....learn from other's experiments. Newbies should be strongly urged to join a league w/ some sort of active discussion. There's nothing like learning from the people that have been playing this great game before them. |

Just suggestion, maybe there could be this thing that comes up when you first download smallball, and train your team, like it says in middle of screen, click your player and drag to different position on screen and it makes them run, then the person has to do that before they move on to the next help thingy.
It would help them understand it more. The have that in alota games these days. |

I think that would help new teams a lot so they can understand how training works and what areas (especially in DT) do. It took me probably several months to learn that hitting in the field increases batting skill. |

an online tutorial would be perfect for beginners
in both st and dt, and there could be a button that you would press to turn it off |

| How about a basic tutorial and glossary of terms on baseball itself? I don't think I've seen that here. Some things, like the infield fly rule and ground rule double, wouldn't apply and could be left out. A few newbies don't really have a grasp of the game, it seems to me. |

Indeed, I really have no idea about the terms of baseball. A tutorial about that could really help. |
