The best way to try and make you understand, is by saying what I always say first.....this is smallball not baseball.
In baseball you can have a sharp pitcher carry a team on a day he has very good stuff. In smallball the server adds skills, positions, and randomness to come up with a winner and score.
You can have for example, two 6 star teams play vs each other. Team A is a team that has trained mostly defense up to that point, while Team B has trained only offense. Both pitchers are about the same skill wise. Since Team B has not trained in defense whatsoever..........how are the outs going to be recorded? I'll tell you how.........the server will give the outs to the pitcher since he is skilled and its the best way at that point to get the outs. In turn..........lots of strikeouts. Pitchers in smallball are way overrated, as all you need is a pitcher that holds enough pitch skill and still get some other skills in to be sharp. Thats why two or three pitchers are better than one because you can rotate on bench to get other skills in. One player out of position, or a player or two slumping can cause the difference between a win and a loss. The server can give back to back scores that look like this......20-15, and 2-1.
Is it the pitcher?

I've been suspecting that this is the way the game actually works for a while now. If true, then it's really a waste of time, isn't it? I mean, it doesn't matter that you make sure your best thrower is in left field, your worst catcher/throwers are at catcher and first base, etc. All that matters is that you have a team that is more trained overall than your opponents. So make sure you train that catcher and first baseman in throw and catch, because that's what really counts. I hope this is wrong and the game engine actually goes batter by batter and checks on the skills of the players involved in the particular at bat, but I've suspected it doesn't for a while now. Btw, there's no Santa Claus either... Crying or Very sad

Your right but just to a point, because you have to remember.....
There are only 6 (plus pitch) skills to be trained, so after a while most teams that are trained regularly will all be at about that same star and skill level. Thats when the next level is crucial in the higher leagues. That next level is finding a edge over your opponent when both are about the same skilled. You find that by having the right players in the right positions so you can train batting more than a skill your forcing on a position. For example......."A team that can bat but cant throw in the outfield" vs "A team that can bat but also can throw in the outfield". Odds are if they are both the same bat wise, the moods, positions and lineups will have more impact on the servers decision.
After that comes another level. that is.....two teams who are both about the same in every aspect of training. Only one word fits this level.....Managing. Thats what separates a average trainer (like me) that can get to the higher levels pretty easily, to say a Catch22 trainer that wins championships constantly.

I have to agree with Nelmo about reaching higher levels. Players can only reach a certain training level. As my teams get better and play better teams at their level, managing players is important. A good example is running. There are certain players who will never be fast. If you have two slow players do you want to bat them back to back? They will clog up the bases if they both are on base. And will always kill rallys by hitting into double plays.
So building a team is a constant learning process on what to know about your team.
