watching now, will edit comments very soon
that was a close game, except for the extra innings, depending on which team you were, some catch and some bat skill, would be my pick, 3rd baseman dropped a sitter in the 1st _________________ BB . 55229 . 130295 . 13611 . 8358 . 856 (SBD Community)

First of all, don't get discouraged. Your team is only a month old. The world of Eight stars is a big one!
Your pitching is excellent, but you need some hitting. I'd say if your fielders aren't dropping the ball regularly, lay off throw and catch for several days, maybe ten days or so until you see them start to commit errors... and hit, hit, hit and run, run, run.
This tame is won by hitting, pitching and running. Fielding is way overrated until you really progress up the Pro Leagues.
Plus, don't ever train your 1st, 3rd basment or cather in catch/throw until you are well into 9*. You'll commit very few errors and you need some batting strength. You can't survive scoring as few runs as you are. You are about to get into the time where you'll start hitting homers.....

Third basemen make long throws (not as long as outfielders do but still long), they shoud be trained in throw. Also, it's not called the hot corner for nothing, they'll need to catch line drives and grounders (would you rather have it get by him for a base hit or would you rather get an out?)...Guys playing first need to know how to catch, not as much as other positions but, when the throw comes from an outfielder or an infielder he needs to catch it (I've seen throws come from third or short and it got by the first baseman, happens with throws from the outfield too). Also lefties will hit it there and he needs to know how to field it. He should be able to throw a little too for those rare situations (like when there is a guy on first [or a slow guy on second] I've seen the batter hit it to first, he steps on first and the runner will try to go from second to third and occasionally the first baseman will throw it, and every once in a blue moon he'll get him out...Rare situation so don't focus on throw, but don't ignore it)...Catchers need to know how to catch (thus the name ) for the times when a runner is coming there way (I've seen too many games where the catcher has obviously been neglected in the catching department so when the throw comes in the ball gets by him, which results in a run scoring and the baserunner(s) moving along). Also in rare situations (like first basemen) they will need to make throws (a while back I initiated a game. I was watching it and there was a guy on base for the opposing team and the batter hit the ball to the outfield. The throw went to home [I can't remember if it was straight from the outfield or if it was through a relay man] and the runner was out. The batter [now runner] was on his way to second already by then and my catcher gunned it over there and the batter [now runner] was out [closest thing to an attempted steal as you'll get]...Rare situation so don't focus on throw, but don't ignore it)...If another strategy works for other people then use yours, I just posted what I have found to work best (then again maybe that's why I'm not doing too hot ). _________________

Hummer,
I humbly disagree with your assessments..
But I encourage people to try stuff and see what works.
Just for kicks, put your worst fielder/catcher at 3rd base... play an exhibition game and watch...see if he doesn't field the ball just fine and throw runners out at first! Same for 1st and catcher...they seldom, if ever drop the ball, except for 1st/3rd base on a pop fly (which rarely happens once you get past playing 7/8* teams)
Remember, it's SmallBall, not baseball! Just because it's the hot corner in baseball, doesn't make it so in SmallBall.

I realize the difference between Smallball and baseball. I've found third base to be very similar in both though. The third baseman should be able to throw to first and second so he needs to get trained in throw. And if he's throwing the ball obviously the ball is getting hit to him, so he needs catch training... If I'm reading correctly what you wrote then you are saying that you shouldn't train your third and first baseman and catcher in throw and catch until you are 9*, am I correct? That just doesn't sound right to me, sorry. But I could be mis-interpreting your message...But as you said "But I encourage people to try stuff and see what works." _________________

You got it right, that is EXACTLY what I'm saying...I reserve 1st/ 3rd and catcher for my big hitters who can't catch or throw worth a dang! _________________

OK, well I guess if it works for you (that strategy for you, other strategies for other people, whatever works) then use it...I may just have to try that out if I start up another team, sounds interesting. _________________

I have found it a very effective strategy for starting new teams. I really only have to train 5 players in catch/throw....plus one in pitch and the rest in hit/run.
It's a good strategy for getting your team up and running quickly. I think you'll find if you watch games that player who can't catch at all catches all kinds of grounders when he plays third.
NOT the same at 2nd or shortstop, where bad fielding will kill you.

I can see what you're saying now. Still sounds kind of weird (because I'm not used to that kind of thinking/training) but I understand it now. _________________

Thanks! Taken note of. By the way, during my last game, batting seems to be okay, except most of the fly balls I hit were always caught. How do I train my players to hit grounders? My batters always hit fly balls while the opponent always manages to hit grounders between my SS and 3rd base which allows for a 1 base gain. _________________ Seishun Gakuen

skill training helps players "place" balls in the gaps better _________________

Patience EchizenR, patience!
This is not a game that you can excel at overnight. That's much of its charm. You have to work hard for the gains that you get.
Even if YOU excel at this game, your team cannot excel overnight! It's a neverending balancing act.
Do me a favor. Put a number in front of every player equal to their original order when you got the team. (I like 1, 2, 3....9, A, B, C) so that each player has a one-digit value.
Now sort by Mood.
Do your players, sorted by mood, line up in numerical order? If not, get them there before you do anything else!
Sorting by the original order means that they are all maxed in that skill.
(Typically, Mood is the only skill that you can max an entire team at once...Mood "Locks In" at 110% once all of your players are maxed).
If you fail to train for a couple of days, your mood will drop quickly! Players in a bad mood play like crap!
