Just read this on ESPN. Steinbrenner is set to make this move soon. Me, being a longtime mariners fan and a yankees hater, this is unexceptable. He belongs with Seattle.

On the bright side, it will be fun to see his temper tantrums again. This time in the big spotlight.

Weird... I really don't see what he's doing wrong. The players just aren't stepping up to the occasion. Maybe Piniella's attitude might spark them up a bit. Laughing

Joe Torre was a mediocre manager at best when he was with the Cardinals. The Yankees were stacked with $10 million players this season. I think Cano was the only starting player not at or very close to $10M. I would hate to manage a team like that. Chemistry issues are nearly inevitable (see Jeter & Rodriguez) and without winning it all the season is considered a failure.
This is the year to change managers. Lots of firings and open positions. It would be surprising to see the Yankees pursue a manager that isn't unemployed, but then again I guess it's not so surprising. Rolling Eyes

I think it was the chemistry more then Torre's fault. He did a hell of a job keeping the team together all season through a series of injuries and manage a shaky bullpen and balance playign time for the youngsters, role players and bench players. When Matsui and Sheffield came bakc it through a monkey wrench inot what he was able to do. I think Sheffs return caused the most probs as it kinda forced Melky out of the starting lineup and put a defensively weaker Matsui into LF again even though I was impressed with Sheffs quick pickup of playing 1B.

and west coast the Yankees have longer roots wiht Pinella then the Mariners. Lou is always gonna be a Yankee first no matter what. But I cant see him managing this team of superstars and especially with the shaky pitching of late. It jsut has me picturing Billy Martin yelling at Reggie for some reason lol.

Yes, Torre has done a good job of managing all these overpaid stars. But the memory of him sitting on the bench during games, still as a statue, looking bored and half asleep, is not good for a team. They say a team takes on the personality of its' manager. Emotionally the team was low key, never showing emotion whether they won or lost. Over a long season that may work, but in a short emotional series you need to get the fire burning, the juices flowing. Showing a little more emotion during a game may not have been enough, but you will never know until you try.

It seemed to work in 96, 98, 99 and 2000. I don't see how you can blame the manager for this loss. Do you really think if he was on the top step yelling at the players they would have pitched better or gotten a clutch hit?

yeah i know that. but with me being a hardcore mariners fan, 4 years with SEA is more then 10 years with NY in my mind. Thats how it works, lol.

I know those arent the correct years, but u get my point. Very Happy

No, it probably wouldn't have with this group of players. But the last 3 seasons his way has not worked. Yes, the starting pitching this season was terrible so they really should think about whether bringing in Pinella and his fiery ways would make a difference. Bringing in high priced pitchers on their downside does not work.

As someone on the radio here in the NY area said, maybe the blueprint for drawing 4 million fans is not the same blueprint for building a championship.

This move is only to keep the fans eyes on the Yankees. Has nothing to do with a better "skipper". They cant spend 25 million on a manager so they go get someone with history just to keep the fans attention. Business move.

I know you guys probably know that, but some that read this thread wont.

This probably means many player changes.
