Wow I can't believe how young some of you kids are. In another forum this kid told me he was 11. When I was 11 I was outside riding my bike all day. I didn't want to be home and stay inside because all my friends were outside and doing jumps with there bikes. We didn't have computers and good video games. We had bikes and army men and toy guns. You kids have it so much better than I did when I was your age. I'm not busting on you kids it's just like I said, I can't believe how young you guys are. I wouldn't and still don't know how to do a lot of the things you guys just take and do naturally. Some of you kids are running tournies and helping to run clubs here at SB. All I can say is wow. You kids are so lucky to have what you have and be so good at it. I hate to admit this but some of us "Old Farts" can learn a lot from you kids. _________________ Don't let the chain of love end with you.

old man jk, you know, back in the day, when gas was 3c a gallon, and moonshine was illegal
they didnt have time for computers, but then the boring nerds found out that they could just make them and sell them for lots of money, gates etc,,
i researched, just yesterday, a kids band here in australia, called "hi 5" for a concert my daughter wants to go to, and the kids on the forum there are 10, - 55 and they talk about how one of the band girls is pregnant, married, being replace etc,,

I disagree that kids today have it better. Sure, they have computers and video games and television, but we had some pretty great things ourselves. We could go out for the whole day without our parents worrying too much. We could go to an abandoned lot and build a tree fort or a bike course. We could go around town and collect enough people to start a baseball game. All outside! All for free! Sure, kids have cool stuff, but they're pretty much stuck in the house because of the dangers of being outside. And yes, I know that some kids go outside a lot, but they're more the exception than the rule. And the amount of time is probably nowhere near what we could spend.
What I find most sad is that I don't think that the dangers of today are a hell of a lot worse than the dangers of yesteryear....I just think they're more reported than they were and that just makes everyone afraid... _________________ "I can resist anything except temptation" - Oscar Wilde |

Good point soli. As a 15-year-old, I wish that I could do that - walk around to people's houses and make a pick-up game, or build a bike course near a field where no one's playing without my parents getting all pissed cuz I'm not home in time for dinner or something dumb like that. Each generation has it's +'s and -'s. _________________ Founder of the SBPA

| I used to play tackle football with the neighbors when I was a kid. If I did that now, it would be certain I would injure myself if I didn't have any pads. I did have a computer when I was a kid, but it was a Tandy, and the best game I had was called Sopwith. This was a good reason for me to be outside (though I did enjoy staying in with my legos). |

I'm 15 as well, and sometimes just listening to some of my Dad's stories makes me wish it was like that still. Going out and just getting a pick-up baseball game, or basketball game, I wish I had that chance. I do like all the video games and PC stuff I get to do now, but it still sounds like it would be a blast to just go out in an abandoned lot and play some stickball... _________________ www.maddenuniverse.com

I've been sitting here for a bit now and thinking about what you all have said. I think my prior thinking was very much flawed. I can't believe I had forgotten how tough things are out there now. I'm thinking if Ginger and I were blessed with being able to have children I too wouldn't want them anywhere I couldn't see them. I had somehow forgotten all the crap I saw when I was a public servant. Young kids doing drug and getting pregnant. Kids living on the street and getting killed for there shoes. Thank you so much for helping me see that kids have a hard time of things and that having all these great toys and such are not just toys for these kids they are helping parents to keep there kids safe. _________________ Don't let the chain of love end with you.

| Its not so bad out here. I'm 16 and me and several of my friends play pick-up baseball games all the time, but not in a friendly way. We usually build rivalries about which neighborhood is better. Even though we have rivalries we don't really hate each other. We just see it as a way of getting the best out of each other Overall I think it's not as bad as it seems. Kids back then still had it better than us. |

I am 11 and i play pickup games all the time. Doesnt metter what sport. I played a game of baseball the other day for like 4 hours. My friends and I all have rivalries in baseball, basketball, football, etc. I admit that i am on the computer a lot but most kids still do play outside a lot. It would be cool to go back in time and see what it was like. _________________ "NOT GOING DOWN UNTIL THE SHIP GOES DOWN!"

That's true. I mean if you're in a city people will definitely want to play basketball or something downt he street. I live in a suburb where everyone is pretty much stuck up. The only reason my family and very few other families aren't so arrogant is that we moved in from somewhere not as fortunate. Also, Pittsburgh isn't much into baseball, at least, for 13 years they haven't been . _________________ Founder of the SBPA

No freedom is right. I should be able to stay out as late as I want without having to worry if my parents called the cops on me again!
But ya, like 5 years back... it was all about the pickup games, building tree forts, messing around at the construction sites of new houses, cops&robbers/manhunt, and just doing crazy stuff around the neighborhood. Then some kids move, some go to this private school... some go to the other, some stay... next thing you know, people are off to college. _________________ XsT | TA# 1.1 | -.- | XXI | $2856.82 (10/27)

Here in Ontonagon Michigan the main sport is hockey. We have a Rec Center that we flood in the winter so that the kids can play Peewee Hockey. In the spring, summer and fall it doesn't get used much. Maybe a fleamarket every once in a while but that's it. Our Peewee team is really good. I guess for the last 10 or so years they have been invited to go play in a big tourney in Detroit. As far as pick up games we have bball hoops, tennis courts and such but I have never seem anyone use them. I fact Ontonagon Twp went through all this crap to make money for a brand new playground and not 1 kid has played there yet. It's a great playground looks awsome and has all kinds of fun things you can do but it's like they built it in the middle of a cemetary. People don't want to be there unless they have to be. Heck even our beaches here are barron. It's really sad. I love going to the beach but I can count on one hand in the last 2 years that someone else has been there other than me. _________________ Don't let the chain of love end with you.

Farther out in the country than me, yes it's true. But there are so many trees, and where there aren't trees it's private property so it's hard to do anything. We usually bike around also. |

I live in a fairly large community and I never see kids out playing street hockey or soccer or baseball unless it's of the organized type. I see a few out on bikes but then I realize they're only going to the 7-11 or convenience store.
Sigh...I didn't like much about being young, but the freedom I had compared to what kids today have is something that I can look back fondly on. Ah well...I'm sure it'll be even worse in a decade or two... _________________ "I can resist anything except temptation" - Oscar Wilde |

When i was a kid I think for me, it was my bicycle and sometimes a skateboard that got the most use. At times there were some tackle football games in a neighbors horse corral, with an occasional broken collar bone. Not so often we would have a baseball game at the local Little League field when it was not in use. When i got a little older i hit the arcades purdy hard. Hey, i learned to kill the dragon and save the princess on Dragon's Lair. Ahhh, good old Dirk the Daring, those were the days!! LoL
Boy, the world we live in sure has changed, it's actually become a little bit scarey. I wish for good times and the best of luck for today's youth.
You got that!?!

I couldn't agree more about the dangers of today. I feel that society in general is a great deal safer today than it was say 20 years ago. The conundrum is that society is more aware of the problems that are out there.
When I was a kid we spent our summers playing sports. We had a large duffle bag full of sports equipment that we would take to the park everyday. We played every sport imaginable (except hockey, no ice) until it was dark. Many of the parents, mine included, didn't let us go inside during the day. Thus all the kids in the neighborhood were good at sports. We could play any game with some proficiency. I thank my lucky stars that we didn't have play station games and the like back then. I am also glad that my parents didn't realize the dangers that were out there, however remote, for a kid unsupervised all day.
I also believe that you can trace today's kids lack of ability in sports to the proliferation of inside entertainment (cable tv, video games, dvds, etc...). This lack of ability has manifested itself in today's pro leagues. Watch a NBA game form the 80's and compare it with today's NBA and you will see what I mean. Today's players are far more athletic, but far less skilled, and I attribute that to the lack of training they had as kids (nothing in this world teaches better than experience). Wonder why MLB has so many players from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico? Is it because they have better athletes? I don't believe so. In those places they don't have as many entertainment choices so they go outside and play the game. Slowly the U.S., Canada, Western Europe, Japan and others will watch the rest of the world surpass them in athletic competition until they too have the same diversions as we do. It is not all bad though, the flip side of the argument is the intellectual enrichment that is available to all who have these diversions (to those you use them wisely).
If you are a kid and you play outside everyday then I think Soli is right, you are the exception rather than the rule. |

I loved that game!!! I got it on my computer at home now but I remember it used to cost a whopping 50 cents to play back in the day. _________________
