You don't. You can start a team, train it and play exhibition games for absolutely free.

But! You have to pay for full access because it costs the company money to create the game, market the game, host the game and make improvements on the game.

Also, if you look hard enough, you'll be able to find owners of teams who are dead, and could use an Assistant Trainer.

For example, I train 8 teams, but I only own 6 of them, 2 of them I AT, 1 I've been ATing since Beta release. It's basically 'my' team I just didn't pay for them. I train, play games, enter leagues with them.
