o.t.--paypal does suck |

i don't think there should be a problem with the way the tickets are sold, but i wouldn't ever trust paypal to protect you from fraud on an ebay auction, whether you are a buyer or a seller.
somebody sold 47 playstation 2's that didn't exist, one of them to me, on an ebay group auction for over $9,000 total a few months ago. it looked a little fishy to me but i thought i was protected going through paypal. wrong! they said "tough luck" via an automated reply to my complaint, several weeks later. i disputed the charge with my credit card issuer and they credited my account and sent the chargeback to paypal. so be careful! |

Sounds like a customer service issue! The thing about credit card/checking fraud is that people often do not go to the source - their own bank or credit card company. That is where your fraud protection originates, not through retailers or other companies. I don't know of any company in the US that handles disputed charges directly - it is part of the credit agreement with visa/mastercard etc that the correct process be followed. In Soggys example, the credit card sent the chargeback to Paypal. Paypal only has to prove to Visa or Mastercard that the proper procedures were followed - if they were, then the credit card company eats the charge. If they weren't, then Paypal eats it. _________________

I have done over 200 paypal transactions, mostly thru auctions on ebay, both buying and selling and have never had a problem. I tend to be very picky on who I deal with though. _________________ "Oderint dum metuant" |

duggie, i agree that the credit card issuer is the best way to dispute a fraudulent charge. most of them have a "no fraud guarantee". i went to paypal first because i errantly thought that as the 3rd party for ebay auctions, that they protected ebayers from fraud. they have the power to take money back out of the frauder's account and credit it to your account, but in this case the guy's account didn't belong to him and of course didnt have any money in it. that's when paypal says "tough luck" and "contact ebay about the problem".
the company i work for DOES handle disputed charges directly and if they can't issue a refund, they will tell you to dispute the charge with your cc issuer, which paypal did not do. after i disputed the charge w/my cc issuer, paypal actually sent a rather scornful email (automated of course) telling me to "please let them know about fraud first before disputing a charge. as far as the cc issuer eating the charge if proper procedures are followed, this might be true. i say "might" because the procedures are so strict that it's never happened, at least not with my company. anyway, sorry this is so long. the whole experience just made me mad! |
