Work heavily on defense...
Defense skills
Run
Catch
Throw
Offense skills
Run
Hitting
With that said don't aim for 10*, aim for a well balanced team. Having all your players being 10* defenders and 8-9* hitters is not going to win you many games. You need to be able to play good defense but hit the crap out of the ball and out score people. |

Don't feel sad.. I've never gotten any closer than #13th or so on the 9* list..
The best advice *I* can give would be to make sure you're either maxed or close to it in running and catching (for everyone) as well as the main skills.. also dont forget to train in bat skill as well.

I am trying 8 months now to make my team 134321 to hit 10* and still progressing. As I trained them quite randomly in the beginning I had and still have some problems with the balance. As for the other team I have 555555 I have been training them for 4 months and they are already better and will hopefully get to it soon. I know it does not mean that your team is very good but that badge is so nice!!!! 
The difference between them is defence and using the benchies....

Another point I feel I should make is that each smallball team is different. You need to have a team with good genes to be able to hold defensive skills well enough to also focus on offense enough without losing to much defensive skill.
Some teams I would say have no chance at making it to 10* no matter how you train them simply because they can't hold skill well enough. |

Small Ball, like life, is unfair. However, unlike in real life, you can always start another team for free or buy rookies to replace your players with "bad genes".

I have never made it past PL2, many have won PL1. Just the way things are. |

I actually don't believe this. (personally) It may be true, but I think every team has the potential to hit 10*. It's up to each respective trainer to "solve" the team in my mind.
(There's always rookies/super rookies too for every team)

Winning JrPL is VERY different to getting 10*, I have never seen a 10* team in JnrPL.
